Read stories from walkers. Why I walk

Soccer Coach and Loren Hinkle smallMy name is Loren Alivia Hinkle.  I am 8 years old.  I will be in 3rd grade next year.  I have had psoriasis since kindergarten.  I have psoriasis all over my whole body except the palms of my hands and soles of my feet.  It is very annoying because it hurts, itches and bleeds a lot.  Sometimes at school I can’t concentrate because I keep thinking about itching my skin and scalp.  It is like having a big mosquito bite you can’t stop itching over your whole body.

I have a really hard time sleeping because it hurts and itches so bad at night.  I am really tired at school a lot because of being up at night.  It is embarrassing having sleepovers sometimes because my pajamas and sheets get bloody.   My friends are really nice to me about my psoriasis but other people stare at me a lot and that hurts my feelings.  Sometimes I don’t feel pretty because my skin has psoriasis all over it.  Mom and dad say I’m still one of the most beautiful girls in the world!

It makes me sad sometimes because I am the only kid in my school who has psoriasis.  I just want to have normal skin like my friends and sisters.  My sisters help me a lot with my psoriasis.  My older sister, Aubri, even went to the Capitol in Washington DC to teach our Congressmen about psoriasis and ask them to help me feel better.  My little sister, Briana takes bathes with me, even though my skin has psoriasis.    She doesn’t care.  She loves me even if I have polka dots all over my body.

I love to play soccer and the piano.  My soccer coach rocks because he is a great coach AND he has psoriasis.  His name is DJ and he has had it since he was a little boy.   I love being on his soccer team because he makes me work hard at soccer but he also knows how bad I feel some days.   He doesn’t let the other girls make fun of me.  I love for DJ to wear shorts so I can see the spots on his legs.  It makes me feel like I am not alone.  He used to do shots when he was a little boy too.  DJ and his family did the KC Walk with us last year and that made me feel so good when they came.  They are going to Walk with us again this year if they can and we are inviting our soccer team to join us!  I am hoping my Brownie troop and teachers  will come too.

I would love for you to join our family in the Kansas City Walk at Theis Park on August 29th.  This Walk will help the Doctors doing research to have the money to help find better treatments for kids like me and all the people with psoriasis.   Hopefully, they will find a cure SOON.   If not, I am going to be a researcher when I grow up so I can find a cure.

Join us at the Walk for Awareness -- Kansas City in an effort to raise funds that one day will find a cure for this disease that affects so many. Please support Loren Hinkle or register for the walk and start your own fundraising campaign at www.psoriasis.org/kansascitywalk
